Joint spacing = 24–36 × thickness (max 15 ft); joints per direction = ceil(dimension ÷ spacing) − 1

Esempio svolto: A 4 in slab: joints every 8–12 ft. A 40 × 20 ft driveway at 10 ft spacing: 3 joints across the length, 1 across the width — panels of 10 × 10 ft.

Control joints (this calculator) are cut 1/4 of the slab depth, within 6–18 hours of finishing. Expansion/isolation joints are different: full-depth compressible material where the slab meets buildings, columns and existing pavement — place them at every fixed object, not on a spacing formula.

Depth matters as much as spacing: a 4-inch slab needs 1-inch-deep cuts. Shallow cuts get ignored by the crack; late cuts arrive after the crack has already chosen its own path.
