Concrete grades are a shorthand for compressive strength — how much load a cured sample can carry before it fails. If you’ve seen “M20” on a drawing or “3000 psi” on a ready-mix quote, both are describing the same property in different systems. This guide decodes the grade system, converts between MPa and psi, and tells you which grade actually fits your project.
What the “M” number means
In the grade designation M20, the M stands for “mix” and the 20 is the characteristic compressive strength in megapascals (MPa) at 28 days, measured on standard test cubes. So M20 concrete reaches at least 20 MPa — about 2,900 psi — after a 28-day cure. The conversion is simple:

American suppliers usually skip the grade label and quote psi directly: 2500, 3000, 4000 psi and so on. A “3000 psi mix” sits between M20 and M25.

Note that above M25, mixes are almost always designed rather than batched by nominal volume ratios — the plant engineers the proportions and verifies strength with cube or cylinder tests.
Why 28 days?
Concrete gains strength as cement hydrates, fast at first and slowing over time. Roughly speaking, concrete reaches about 65–70% of its design strength at 7 days and its full characteristic strength at 28 days, which is the standard test age. It keeps gaining slowly for years afterward. This is why forms can often come off in days, but you shouldn’t drive on a new driveway for at least a week.
Choosing a grade for common projects
- Garden path or shed base: M15 is adequate; M20 adds margin for little extra cost.
- House slab or driveway: M20 (≈2,900–3,000 psi) is the residential standard in most climates. In freeze-thaw regions, US codes typically push driveways to 3,500–4,000 psi with air entrainment.
- Footings and foundations: M20–M25 depending on loads and soil; follow your engineer’s spec.
- Suspended slabs, beams, columns: M25 minimum in most codes.
- Industrial floors, high traffic: M30+ with attention to surface finishing and joints.
Strength isn’t the only lever: durability, exposure conditions, and cover to reinforcement matter just as much. A garage floor in a road-salt climate needs air-entrained concrete more than it needs an extra 5 MPa.
Grade vs quantity: two separate questions
The grade determines what you order; the volume determines how much. A 6 m × 4 m slab at 100 mm thick needs 2.4 m³ whether it’s M15 or M30 — only the price per cubic meter changes (higher grades typically cost 5–15% more). Practical notes on hitting the grade
Specifying M25 doesn’t guarantee M25 in the ground. Three things sabotage strength on site:
- Added water. Asking the driver to “wet it up” for easier placing can knock 15–25% off compressive strength. Order a higher slump or a plasticizer instead.
- Poor curing. Concrete that dries out in the first week may reach only 60–80% of its potential. Keep it damp — cover with plastic, ponding, or curing compound — for at least 7 days.
- Cold weather. Below about 5 °C (40 °F), hydration nearly stalls. Use blankets or accelerators, and never pour on frozen ground.
Choose the grade for the load and exposure, protect it while it cures, and the strength printed on the delivery ticket will be the strength in your slab.
