Trench volume = Length × Width × Depth Ejemplo resuelto: A 30 ft trench, 18 in wide × 18 in deep: 30 × 1.5 × 1.5 = 67.5 ft³ ÷ 27 = 2.5 yd³ — order 2.75+ yd³; trenches over-break.
Trench-fill foundations pour the excavation full of concrete instead of building up blockwork from a footing — fast, and common in the UK. The volume math is a long, deep rectangle.

Real trenches are never neat: sides slough, bottoms undulate, and widths grow beyond the bucket size. Use 10% waste minimum, and 15% in loose soils.

What is a duct bank?
A concrete-encased group of electrical conduits in a trench. Compute the trench volume here, then subtract conduit displacement (a 4 in conduit displaces 0.087 ft³ per foot).
How much extra should I order for trench work?
10% minimum, 15% in sandy or loose soils. Trench sides collapse and bottoms are uneven — trenches consistently take more than the tape measure says.
Is trench fill cheaper than footings plus blockwork?
It uses more concrete but far less labor and time. For narrow deep foundations it's often the economical choice.
